I found this thread on a popular wedding forum. Every bride has heard of it, and most have been there. You’ll recognize it!

Anyway, here is a perfect example of a bride doing research on a potential wedding vendor. There are a couple of good pieces of advice given by forum members with hundreds or thousands of posts worth of experience.

The bottom two posts are the vendor in question posing as two (supposedly) different people vouching for the company. Note that “they” are already married and have only one single post to their credit. Easy to spot if you think about it! My comments are in red.

The right lighting effects can make a BIG difference in the overall experience at your party. There are some exceptions though. If your event is outdoors during the daytime, or in a room with lots of windows (and no curtains or blinds), no one will notice the lights, and they are probably not worth the extra cost.

For evening events in a properly darkened room, lights can be everything. They help create excitement and motion on your dance floor, and can actually help draw people out of their seats to the floor. The right lighting effect for the right song is also very important. Wild crazy flashing lights will keep people away from the floor during a slow song. For that you will need something soft and romantic to enhance the mood of the music. The dance floor lights should always match the style of music.

Room decor lighting (also known as “uplighting”) is a great way to enhance your party. The right decor lighting can turn a plain room into something special. It can even make an ugly room surprisingly tolerable! If you’re having your party in a tent, you have a giant white canvas just waiting to be painted with colored light. Pick colors that match your theme, and have them fade from one to the next. The possibilities are endless. Room decor lighting is very popular right now.

As an added note to the lighting topic, be sure to ask for LED lighting. Traditional incandescent lighting takes a LOT of electricity, and can lead to power issues. LED lights take very little electricity, so you won’t need an electrical engineer to tap into the power lines just to make sure you have enough.

For more tips and information about lighting for your event, contact Stax O Wax DJ Productions at 847-639-STAX.

Here is a classic example of a company that may not be what it appears to be. If you’re from the Chicago area, you may even recognize it. This one was so easy to spot that you don’t even have to look hard. This company’s own Facebook page and web site contradict each other. Click on the web site photos below to see them full sized.

Has this business been around for 22 years as their web site says, or a little over one year like their Facebook page says? Their domain registry seems to match up with the Facebook post. Would you trust a company that doesn’t seem to know how long it has been around? A quick look at this company’s customer reviews (8 as of today) on WeddingWire.com completes the picture. There is a customer review for a wedding in 2007, which was before this company existed. This person may have been a DJ for more than a year, but not under this company name. In the 2007 review, it appears that two different DJ companies performed at the same wedding. You be the judge.

Advice: Don’t let a slick sales presentation close the deal for you. Do your own research. Shop carefully.

Over the years I’ve had literally dozens of recently married couples approach me as a guest at a wedding reception, and tell me they shopped my company when they were looking for DJ. However, they went with another company because they were cheaper. Now they’re telling me they wish they had gone with me because they see we are so much better than the DJ they chose. The cheaper price didn’t turn out to be such a bargain after all. My standard answer is: “We do great anniversary parties”.

I’m not trying to be mean, it’s just that… I can’t help you any more. Your once-in-a-lifetime day has passed. Was it worth saving $100? $200? People ask me all the time if I will price match some other DJ. No, I won’t. I’m better than he is, and I’m worth the extra money. Compare my customer reviews to his, compare my years of experience to his, compare my sound and lighting equipment to his, and the answer is obvious. When shopping for a DJ, most people shop like they do for groceries. This one is $1 cheaper, get this one. They’re all the same, right? Wrong.

When I’m talking to soon-to-be-wed couples shopping for a DJ, the preconception is that the DJ is just playing recorded music, and how could anyone possibly screw that up? Well… we’ve all heard the horror stories. Many people look at it more like renting a human jukebox rather than someone whose personality, talent, and experience can make their wedding reception one they’ll be be proud of for the rest of their married life. How much money is the success of your wedding reception worth? Considering the total investment you’ve made, probably more than a hundred bucks. On your 20th anniversary, how would you like to remember your wedding day? Do you want to smile and fondly remember “We had so much fun!”, or roll your eyes and say “I wish we had hired someone else”.

Last summer I was playing music at a car show on a warm Sunday afternoon, and a couple saw my sign and came over to let me know that I had played for their wedding reception 22 years ago. They were so excited that I was still around (?), and said their reception was so much fun that their families still talk about it to this day. Can you imagine how proud that must make them feel? That’s how I want every one of my customers to feel, and I use all of my experience and know-how to do it every weekend. Does “Mr. $50 special” do that? I don’t know. Shop wisely.
